Digital Distribution on Platforms: The Record Labels’ Point of View

Organised by the Catalan Jazz and Modern Music Musicians Association (AMJM)

The Catalan Jazz and Modern Music Musicians Association of counts several record companies among its members. In a context where access to music has been complicated by an unlimited and saturated digital market, where recommendation systems benefit only a few, three independent record labels will share their daily experiences. They will also reveal the main risks and challenges they face in continuing to support the creative music scene.

Joan Chamorro

Joan Chamorro [Jazz To Jazz, Spain]

Renowned jazz musician and educator, Joan Chamorro is a multi-instrumentalist specializing in saxophones, clarinets, double bass, and more. He was the founder and director of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band (2006-2024), an innovative project that has trained numerous young talents and become a reference in jazz education. His work with the band is featured in the documentary A Film About Kids & Music,  which has won more than 14 international awards.

With over 100 recorded albums, many as a bandleader, he has collaborated with renowned jazz musicians and received several awards recognizing his artistic career and pedagogical contributions. Additionally, he has conducted master classes in countries such as the USA, Mexico, Colombia, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, France, Italy, and Poland, among others.

Ignasi-Terraza

Ignasi Terraza [Swit Records, Spain]

Ignasi Terraza is one of Spain’s most prominent jazz pianists, with a significant international presence. In 2009, he won the first prize at the Jacksonville International Jazz Piano Competition in the United States. He has an extensive discography, with over 60 recordings released in Spain, France, Switzerland, and Japan, half of which are as a bandleader, and ten with his trio.

He has accompanied renowned musicians such as Frank Wess, Lou Donaldson, Benny Golson, John Faddis, and Jesse Davis, among others. His trio has featured notable musicians like Bobby Durham, Jeff Hamilton, Gregory Hutchinson, and Pierre Boussaguet.

His style is rooted in the jazz tradition, with influences from artists like Oscar Peterson and Ahmad Jamal, while incorporating elements of European classical music to develop a distinctive voice and a very personal sound. His playing is characterized by virtuosity, the rhythmic drive of swing, and the sensitivity of his expression.

UNDERPOOL

Sergi Felipe [Underpool, Spain]

UnderPool is an independent record label based in Barcelona that specializes in contemporary jazz and improvised music. In recent years, they have released albums by artists from the Barcelona music scene as well as international musicians. UnderPool has its headquarters and a studio where they record and produce most of the releases in their catalog.

Martí Farré

Martí Farré [Music journalist, Spain]

Martí Farré is a music journalist specializing in jazz. He has work for various general media such as El Periódico de Catalunya, Ara, and Més Tarragona, as well as specialized publications like Jaç—where he was editor-in-chief—, Tomajazz, Qualsevol Nit, La Ruta del Jazz and Barcelona Metròpolis.

In radio, he has co-founded, co-directed and co-hosted a program focused on jazz on Ràdio L’Hospitalet and Scanner FM. He is also co-editor of the book Els 100 millors discos del jazz català (Enderrock / Cossetània, 2012). Currently, he collaborates with the digital culture platform Núvol and the magazine 440. He is also the editor of the Jazz Butlletí of AMJM, host of the podcast Escolta’m (Ràdio Fabra), dedicated to the activities of Taller de Músics, and presenter of the Barcelona i el jazz cycle at the Centre Cívic Casa Golferichs.
