Pedra i Ploma is an invitation to “keep going,” but with care and deliberation, attending to what we love and what we reject. It is the third album by Escarteen Sisters, featuring nine original compositions that also explore new sounds and timbral experiments. They like to describe themselves as a duo within a string quartet: vocal strings and bowed strings, those that can be seen and those that can only be heard. In this way, they continue walking with what they have; with their feathers and stones, with what weighs and what lightens, with what they carry in firm fists and open hands.
Escarteen Sisters is a string quartet in duo format: two sisters, a viola and a cello. Singing and playing at the same time, they use the instrument to accompany the voice and the voice to accompany the instrument. Their work is characterized by the intimate and direct interaction between two sisters who have been making music together since childhood. Multiculturalism within the family is the guiding thread of their work: half Flamenco, half Spanish, born in Mexico and Belgium. In their compositions, one can hear chamber music textures, folk-inspired melodies, African rhythms, and jazz harmonies, combined with original lyrics sung in various languages.
