Tumbando a Monk

Formed in 2011 in Cádiz, Tumbando a Monk emerged as a vibrant tribute to the genius of Thelonious Monk, reinterpreting his legacy through the colours of Latin jazz, Caribbean rumba and the rhythmic tradition of Cádiz. The sextet blends respect with playfulness, preserving Monk’s essence while pushing his music into new directions.

Their repertoire alternates original compositions with pieces by the American pianist —from classics like «Straight No Chaser» or «’Round Midnight» to lesser-known gems— conveying that singular rhythmic character and the dissonant, sophisticated harmonies that shaped his work.

With their debut album, Se abre el Thelonious… (Blue Asteroid Records, 2016), the band made their expansive approach clear: mozambique, merengue, guaguancó, songo, cha-cha-cha, bolero, danzón, afro, reggae and even tangos merge with swing and Latin jazz in an open, diverse and deeply danceable proposal.

Their second album, Nadie conoce este misterio (Blue Asteroid Records, 2023), takes things a step further into experimentation, with fresh arrangements, freer improvisation and a bold sonic identity —without losing the carefree, festive groove that has always defined the band.

Live, Tumbando a Monk is pure celebration: energy, rhythm, improvisation and dance. Their music bridges Afro-Caribbean roots, Andalusian cadences and jazz sophistication, turning every concert into a collective party.
